This internship supports communications and marketing for the Safe Shelter Collaborative. Developed and launched by Caravan Studios and Polaris, the Safe Shelter Collaborative helps participating agencies find shelter faster for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence. The Caravan Studios Internship Program offers students a combination of practical real world experience, formal and informal mentoring activities, and opportunities to develop networking and community-building skills. Although our internships are unpaid, we offer a unique and well-rounded internship experience that provides excellent hands-on experience in a supportive and dynamic nonprofit environment, as well as an introduction to future employment and career opportunities.


About Caravan Studios

Caravan Studios is a division of TechSoup, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in San Francisco, CA. We build apps that help communities organize, access, and apply local resources to their most pressing problems. Our design thinking methodology includes community input throughout, ensuring that the developed applications meet the needs of the community.


Internship Responsibilities

Caravan Studios is searching for a student with strong writing and organizational skills who has a broad understanding of marketing and communication solutions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Help develop and implement a client engagement communications plan for the Safe Shelter Collaborative.
  • Write communication pieces (e.g., monthly newsletters, FAQs, polls) to inform and engage members of the Safe Shelter Collaborative.
  • Research and help prioritize opportunities for conferences and events that convene professionals in the anti-trafficking and anti-DV communities.
  • Arrange and coordinate logistics for orientation sessions.
  • Support program planning and management meetings via note-taking and action-tracking.
  • Use contact database to document correspondence and next steps.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Familiarity with external-facing communication styles, including writing for newsletters and online channels.
  • Attention to detail with excellent editing and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently with a variety of professionals.
  • The ability to think strategically about situations and apply learnings to create solutions.
  • A love of learning and strong research skills.
  • Interest and experience in working in fast-paced, community-driven environments.
  • Educational background or work experience in in social work community organizing, communication marketing, or related field.

Internship Eligibility

All interns must be enrolled in a college class or program and should have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better.


  • 10 to 20 hours per week; exact weekly schedule to be defined.
  • Depending on the intern, some of this work can be accomplished remotely.
  • Minimum of 3 months, with up to 9 months possible.


  • Gain hands-on experience in communications and content development at a small innovative nonprofit organization.
  • Develop portfolio examples to share with future employers.
  • Access to extensive national nonprofit and technologist network.
  • Develop community engagement skills.
  • Access to innovative ideas/products.
