Community Research and Planning Internship

The Caravan Studios Internship Program offers interns a combination of practical real world experience, formal and informal mentoring, and opportunities to develop networking and community-building skills. We offer a unique, well-rounded, and hands-on internship experience in a supportive and dynamic nonprofit environment, as well as an introduction to future employment and career opportunities.

Caravan Studios is a division of TechSoup, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in San Francisco, CA. We build apps that help communities organize, access, and apply local resources to their most pressing problems. Our design thinking methodology includes community input throughout, ensuring that the developed applications meet the needs of the community.

Internship

This internship is for individuals who are interested in developing and expanding their knowledge in research and planning for social good. Interns will be introduced to our design methodology which includes community input throughout the design and development process. Our use of community-centered design methodology ensures that the tools we build will best meet the specific needs of the community served.

The intern will focus on identifying geographic and political regions where Caravan Studios tools and resources can be best utilized, using a “Community Discovery” process which includes analyzing and researching the community (at the individual level) and identifying their needs. Following that analysis we explore and research the community (at the organizational level, i.e. NGOs, educational institutions, public and private organizations, etc.) to identify existing programs and services, resulting in a Community Discovery landscape.

The Community Discovery landscape is a key document for the use and distribution of our apps, programs, and services as they identify the types of programs, resources, and services to implement.  It will also inform the development of new and/or existing programs and service that are in demand among community members.

Please note: this unpaid internship is part-time during the school year (2-3 days per week) and eligible to be full-time during the summer, lasting from three months (minimum) to six or nine months (preferred). The internship is located in the San Francisco office with remote access possible for some activities as appropriate and effective.

To apply, submit a cover letter and resume to Mary Duffy, Director of Educational Programs, Caravan Studios.
